What does the AS 5810 Home Compostable certification mean?

Australian Bioplastics Association certifications

Our Compostable range is certified by the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA). The HOME COMPOSTABLE logo verifies that our packaging will breakdown under home composting conditions back into water, carbon dioxide (CO2) and biomass, and will be non-toxic to the environment.

To carry this standard they must also biodegrade in a home compost within 180 days, i.e. approx 6 months. Under commercial composting conditions, it would happen much faster, and as litter (e.g. under a tree) it would happen slower, but it will happen. The Australian Standard is one of the most rigorous in the world and includes a worm toxicity test which means that our Compostable Mailer Packs are safe to be eaten by the little, pink wriggly guys.

Our AS5810 certification number is ABAP 20226. You can find our certification listing here. We are also proud members of the Australasian Bioplastics Association, the organisation responsible for setting and upholding these standards.

NOTE: If you ever see packaging displaying the AS5810 symbol without an ABA number it is not legitimate. Keen to know more? We’ve written a blog post on how to check the legitimacy of compostable packaging.
